Q&A With A Ventriloquist: I Work With Dummies!

June 23, 2025

There’s something magical about making people laugh so hard they forget where they are. For me, that magic started back in school, where I couldn’t resist cracking a joke, even if it landed me in the principal’s office. These days, the stage has replaced the classroom, and the laughs are intentional. Comedy and ventriloquism have been my lifelong passions, and I’m thrilled to share a little bit about how this joyride got started, who helped steer the way, and why clean comedy is my jam.

1. When did you start doing comedy?

I was the “class clown” in school growing up, always able to find the humor in everyday life. My uncle introduced me to ventriloquism at a young age, and I used a puppet to share my observations about the funny things around me through the puppet’s persona. After high school, I started getting paid gigs as a ventriloquist, which allowed me to pursue my passion for making people laugh. Watching others laugh wholeheartedly brings me immense joy because I know that when people are laughing, they aren’t thinking about anything else. Laughter truly is the best medicine.

2. Who was your inspiration?

My uncle Bill Spake was my inspiration growing up. He lived to be 93 years old and continued to make me laugh even in his later years. Uncle Bill was a ventriloquist for the Ringling Circus for a time. My first introduction to ventriloquism came when I was seven years old and saw him perform with his character, Roger. I was immediately hooked and knew I had to learn comedy and ventriloquism myself. I am also inspired by ventriloquists such as Jay Johnson, Jimmy Nelson, Paul Winchell, and Edgar Bergen. In terms of comedy, I look up to Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Red Skelton, and Don Rickles.

3. How long did it take you to become really good at your craft? What are the ways you honed your skills?

I practice every day because I want to continue learning and exploring new ways to make people laugh. I focus on ventriloquism techniques and vocal exercises daily. By trying out new material in public, videotaping myself, and reviewing the recordings, I can critique my performance and refine my skills.

4. What was your favorite show/performance? Why?

I love what I do! My favorite show is always the next one. I enjoy performing for both adult and family audiences. To cater to each group, I’ve developed different ventriloquial characters. Additionally, I write comedy tailored to each audience. It’s not uncommon for some of my characters to know audience members and interesting tidbits about them, which leads to hilarious conversations between them and my characters. I also ad-lib and engage in improv with the puppets, making each show a unique experience.

5. Why clean comedy?

Clean comedy is an important part of my personal values. I believe I can be funny without being vulgar. It adds value to any event, whether for adults or families, and appeals to diverse audiences without crossing any lines. This approach also reassures event organizers, as they don’t have to worry about complaints from people who might be offended.
